"The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has been accomplished"
~George Bernard Shaw
Communication is a seemingly simple concept yet wrought with connotation and subtext, making it an elusive goal for health professionals. The many challenging issues in communication such as language, culture, attitudes, non-verbal expression, ideas, concerns and expectations, are complicated by limitations of time or training for health care providers, which may be further magnified at times of crisis. Clear and compassionate communication is an integral part of medical and health professionalism for quality patient care and favourable health outcomes. “Making sense in communication” is a step towards this elusive goal and a fitting aim for this conference.
The Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine, University of Hong Kong, is very pleased to extend our warmest invitation to friends and colleagues to join us in exploring the fascinating sub-themes of Culture, Medicine and Language, Clinical Communication Skills, Patient-centered Communication, Teaching and Learning Communication and Communication in Crisis.
