Upcoming PBL Training Programme for New Tutors 2021-2022

Upcoming PBL Training Programme for New Tutors 2021-2022

A one-to-one PBL Training Programme for New Tutors has been running since 2003/04, with the aim of training staff members (including honorary appointees) who are unfamiliar with this approach to teaching and learning to become qualified PBL tutors.

Trainee:

  • All teaching staff (including honorary staff) who are not exposed to any formal training on PBL and are to be appointed as PBL tutors will be the major target audience.  Teachers who would like to brush-up their PBL tutoring skills are also welcomed to join.

Trainer:

  • PBL Educators or experienced PBL Tutors are invited to join the Programme as “trainers”.

Mechanism:

  • Trainee will have to go through the self-training materials provided by the Faculty in advance. Then the trainee will arrange a briefing session with the assigned trainer to discuss the principles and dynamics of PBL and practical issues in running the tutorials.
  • The trainer is suggested to share with the trainee on the following: (i) the approach that he/she adopts in tutoring a PBL group; (ii) the problems that he/she encounters; (iii) the ways on how he/she overcomes the problems; (iv) the approach on how he/she should tackle or teach a PBL case (e.g. the preparation that is required before the sessions) and so on so forth.
  • Major issues discussed in the meeting should be recorded in the trainee’s logbook.
  • Trainee will sit-in the PBL tutorial(s) of the trainer
  • Trainee will conduct the PBL tutorial under observation by the trainer. The trainer is then invited to give comments and assess the overall performance of the trainee in the Assessment Form.
  • The trainer and the trainee should then conduct a debriefing session where they can analyse what worked well and what could be improved in the running of the PBL tutorials.  Again, major issues discussed should be recorded in the trainee’s logbook.
  • If the trainee is able to perform up to a satisfactory level, he/she will receive a certificate and be qualified as a trained PBL Tutor.
