University’s Teaching Excellence Awards 2019 - Outstanding Teaching Award

Dr Brian H.Y. Chung
Department of Paediatrics & Adolescent Medicine, Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine

How did you start your affiliation with HKU Med?
I am a MBBS graduate from Class 99’. After finishing my internship in 2000, I started working in the Department of Paediatrics & Adolescent Medicine as a Clinical Assistant Professor/Associate Professor.

How would you describe your teaching style?
As a student and teacher growing up in HKU, I embraced our vision to provide a “total learning experience”. To me, the total learning experience starts at the moment students become able to be touched by the patient’s life as well as his or her illness. As a clinical educator, I try to surpass the provision of content knowledge and foster critical thinking and problem-solving skills. The learners must see that the ultimate goal is not to be a good student but a good doctor, someone that can be entrusted with the responsibilities of the health of Hong Kong citizens.

What is the most creative thing you have done to engage your students?
Experiential learning is a standard practice in teaching medicine. However, clinical reasoning is often not explicitly addressed. Rather, it is assumed that these skills will be learned by observation during clinical placements. Paediatrics is among the first to implement formal teaching of clinical reasoning. The module is well received as students start to see how their medical knowledge is organized, integrated and applied in the decision making process in the most authentic environment:- “All your teachings have helped me develop the essential mindset and skillset to become a competent doctor. The management-oriented case presentation and clinical reasoning have inspired me new ways to approach medicine, not just paediatric problems but that of other areas too (MBBS20 student).”

How do you relate to your students?
Every student is different in their learning style and needs. I enjoy the process of guiding my students to rediscover themselves and break through their own limits. I set high expectations and I challenge and support them to go beyond their comfort zones.  I hope to influence my students with my passion in clinical genetics. By exposing them to the authentic environment where genomic medicine is “in action”, I hope I can make them see the possibilities of direct translation of research into clinical application and how innovations and creativities can help to solve real life problems of patients and families.

What did you like most when teaching in HKU Med?
HKU Med always plays a pioneering role in medical education and training in Hong Kong and Asia, setting the benchmark for excellence with our heritage and achievements. Everyone is dedicated to creating and supporting the learning environment and culture that allow learners to thrive, to fully engage in the learning process and to reach their full potential. I feel well supported by my department and the Faculty in my journey as a clinical educator. Colleagues are enthusiastic and very collaborative. For example, with a lot of support from the Faculty, I am launching a new module in genetic counselling under the Master of Medical Science Program with 2 other colleagues, in order to nurture local talents and to prepare Hong Kong for the new era of genomic medicine.
