Student Engagement and Partnership (STEP) Program – A Pilot Project for the Paediatrics Curriculum

Professor Sophelia Hoi Shan Chan, Department of Paediatrics and Adolescent Medicine

As students listen to lectures, through group learning activities and tutorials, they may recognize discrepancies in content, learning materials, repetition, and more. Traditional student feedback mechanisms such as end-of-course evaluations can give formative feedback to the faculty to improve the current curriculum. While student feedback is a good reference point, we would like to take one step forward engaging the students as partners to help the faculty to co-design the changes in the Paediatric curriculum and educational videos. In fact, previous studies have shown that student partnership should be considered in curriculum development and such practice showed positive outcomes in curriculum changes [S. Brooman, S. Darwent & A. Pimor,2015] and also improved the attendance to lectures [Scott KW, et al, 2019].

Currently, the Paediatric MBBS Year 4 Junior Clerkship activities include whole-class lectures, small group learning, videos on clinical skills, and bedside teaching. With the STEP Program, students will be engaged and partnered with the teacher to act as student-teacher to co-create the educational videos for teaching. This pilot STEP program embraces the perspective of both the students and the teachers. Under the current pilot program, we evaluate the feasibility of this student-teacher collaboration, in the development of a more student-centered Paediatric curriculum. The students also get the opportunity to perform something novel in partnering with the teacher in the co-creation of educationally materials - the clinical videos, and even as a student-teacher to help the on-video demonstration. At the end of the study, a survey will be carried out to evaluate the improvement of the clinical videos from the teachers and the students that are not involved in this pilot project. Two interviews will be performed, one for the participating students and one for the participating teachers, to evaluate the challenge and the factors that make the STEP Program feasible or difficult to implement, and the benefit and impact to the students and the teachers.

The cross-departmental teaching collaboration between the Department of Paediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, and the Department of Family Medicine and Primary Care, in this STEP Program, will also allow curriculum sharing and the sharing of educational videos that will benefit the collaborative learning experience of both the students and the teachers. Moreover, the experience of this pilot project will also be shared with teachers within the Paediatrics department in educational meetings, and also with other clinical departments at local educational conferences to explain what is ‘Student-Teacher Partnership’ is and how it can promote learning, and why it advances the medical education.

Creation and Integration of an Electronic Health Record Platform in Healthcare Education

Dr. Ann Ka Yan Leung, Department of Pharmacology and Pharmacy

The use of electronic health records (EHRs) is an essential skill applied in the provision of healthcare. To be ready for professional practice, pharmacy students need to be familiar with collecting relevant patient data, medication order entry and verification, medication reconciliation and documentation in an EHR setting. The need for formalized training in using health care technology and digital health are recognized in the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) Standards 2016 and the Digital Health in Pharmacy Education Report 2021. A survey of accredited US pharmacy schools in 2017 reported that 37 of 59 responding schools already use EHRs in their curriculum. Similarly, the importance and development of EHR training in medical, nursing and interprofessional education are well documented in the literature. This project will build HKUMed-EHR, an experiential, case-based teaching learning platform in the format of an electronic health record. This platform will be designed in consultation with local healthcare providers and teachers to fully adapt to the learning needs of healthcare professional students in Hong Kong. HKUMed-EHR will be integrated into a wide variety of learning activities and assessments throughout the 4 years of BPharm curriculum. Authentic patient cases will be adapted and built into the system to replace paper cases. Students will have individual accounts to navigate the system to develop competencies such as gathering patient information, formulating pharmaceutical care plans and case presentations, verifying medication orders, addressing drug info enquiries, and documentation. HKUMed-EHR will also provide a library of patient cases with clear learning outcomes for student self-study, addressing the consistent requests for additional case examples from BPharm students. Pharmacy students are important partners at all stages of this project, from features and interface design to the evaluation of this project's impact on student learning.

HKUMed-EHR is designed for multidisciplinary education in healthcare. It is expected that the experience of integrating HKUMed-EHR into pharmacy education will serve as a pilot to inform its future application in nursing, IPE, and other disciplines in the Faculty of Medicine.

Engaging BPharm Students as Partners in Teaching and Learning: Establishment of Online Learning Activity in Dietary Supplements

Mr. Tsun Lee, Department of Pharmacology and Pharmacy

Dietary supplements play a significant role in public health, and their use is widespread in Hong Kong. To date, complementary and alternative medicines (CAM) has not been extensively included in current clinical pharmacy teaching curriculum yet. In view of this, there is a need to promote teaching and learning of CAM to enhance student’s learning in this area.

This project aims to incorporate the concepts of “Student as Partners” into teaching. In the project, students from Bachelor of Pharmacy (BPharm) will take the initiative to construct an interactive web-based E-learning platform, “SuppleMentors”. This platform will feature engaging short education videos focused on selected dietary supplements. Participants will have the flexibility to engage in self-directed learning at their convenience, fostering an enjoyable and relaxed learning experience.

With Outcomes-Based Approaches to Student Learning (OBASL), post-activity quizzes will be given to consolidate students’ learning outcomes. These interactive assessments will facilitate students to apply knowledge that they acquire through the E-learning activity. In order to motivate and empower students, a scoring system will be implemented, and participating students who successful completed all learning modules will be awarded a Certificate of Completion. The effectiveness of the project will be evaluated by assessing student’s learning outcomes and their feedback on the “SuppleMentors” platform.

By bridging the gap between CAM and mainstream clinical pharmacy education, this project aims to equip students with valuable knowledge and skills for their future practice. Besides, the project also builds students’ sense of ownership of the teaching and learning of BPharm programme.

All HKU colleagues are welcome.
