  • Abstract
In this workshop, Professor Cynthia Whitehead will discuss ways to examine assumptions and presuppositions that underpin various aspects of health professions education (HPE). For any problem, issue, or area in HPE, there may be important testable assumptions related to objectivist empirical work in each domain. Alternately, when exploring ways societal institutions, processes, or roles are constructed, social theories can be extremely useful in identifying assumptions underpinning the framing of these phenomena.

The workshop will begin with a brief didactic description of this approach to interrogating presuppositions and assumptions in HPE to orient participants to this framing. No prior knowledge of the approaches and/or theories is expected or needed. Next, Dr Whitehead will provide a series of illustrative examples. Participants will then work in small groups to examine assumptions within academic articles spanning various aspects of HPE (curriculum, assessment, clinical reasoning, clinical supervision, accreditation, feedback, globalization, etc). Finally, small groups will report back to the large group and reflect on benefits and challenges of using this approach to developing a deeper understanding of the ways we think about our work as teachers, learners, and scholars.
