  • Abstract

As educators, we recognize the profound impact that motivation has on students’ academic achievement. However, it can sometimes be particularly challenging to foster and sustain high levels of student engagement in small group discussions. While we understand the importance of our responsibility to manage the classroom and provide teaching and learning activities that are appropriate, inclusive, and linked with the achievement of learning outcomes, we often face uncertainty about whether we are truly optimizing learning. The purpose of this sharing is to provide valuable insights into basic motivation theories and utilize these theories to inform effective teaching strategies in managing small group discussions. Furthermore, we aim to inspire teachers and facilitators to form a community of practice (CoP) centred around the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL). By fostering a CoP, we can tap into the experiences of seasoned educators, exchange ideas, explore best practices, and gain inspiration to enhance student engagement and achievement in small-group learning. In this “sandbox” of learning, we can create a gold mine of ideas, where we can experiment with different teaching approaches and activities, learn from our successes and challenges, and collaborate to develop innovative solutions to common pedagogical problems inherent to small group discussion.
