BIMHSE Educators’ Alliances & Networking Sessions (BEANS): Meet the Medalist
Join our Meet the Medalist series to celebrate the stories and experiences of Ms. Jody CHU, Prof. Brian CHUNG, and Dr. Christopher MAK! This interactive gathering is designed to foster connections and spark discussions on the transformative power of partnerships. The session will unfold in two sections:
Ms. Jody CHU will share her journey of transitioning from a frontline hospital clinical pharmacist to an educator, including the ups and downs, challenges, and rewards along the way. Importantly, she will highlight how to turn “negatives” into opportunities for improvement and growth, while holding onto what you really believe in as an educator
Prof. Brian CHUNG and Dr. Christopher MAK will introduce the “Flip and Flip Again” model, which moves students between the classroom and the ward to create protected space for reflection away from ward pressure. Medical students often learn what to diagnose but struggle with how to think when facing a real patient. Participants will explore situational clinical reasoning: the skill of choosing the right diagnostic framework for each unique patient rather than applying every approach at once. Woven throughout are real patient stories, including children on long diagnostic odysseys, grounding the session in the belief that medicine is ultimately about walking with patients through their journey.
All staff are welcome.
Ms Jody CHU
Recipient of the Early Career Teaching Award 2017 and Faculty Teaching Medal 2025
Senior Lecturer, Department of Pharmacology and Pharmacy
Ms. CHU is a senior lecturer and pharmacist who places student feedback at the center of her teaching. Having students as her partners in innovative teaching ideas, she developed a Professional Development Programme as part of the BPharm Programme, which is now incorporated into the curriculum. With support from other HKUMed programmes, Jody also designed and implemented an innovative interprofessional learning programme in a primary healthcare setting, emphasising competency building and team dynamic enhancement.
Prof. Brian CHUNG
Recipient of the Faculty Teaching Medal 2018 and HKU Outstanding Teaching Award 2019
Clinical Associate Professor, Department of Paediatrics and Adolescent Medicine
Prof. CHUNG is a clinical geneticist and medical educator who places rare disease patient stories at the heart of clinical reasoning education. He invites students to slow down and reflect, moving them between the ward and the tutorial room to create thoughtful space for systematic reasoning. He believes humans are storytelling animals, and that students learn not just what to diagnose but how to think by engaging with patients’ diagnostic journeys.
Dr. Christopher MAK
Assistant Lecturer, Department of Paediatrics and Adolescent Medicine
Dr. MAK teaches The World Changed by DNA, using real patient experiences in rare disease to help non-specialist undergraduates appreciate the human dimensions of diagnosis. Working alongside Prof. CHUNG, he brings a researcher’s perspective to the classroom, connecting genomic science with patient storytelling to show students how careful listening to a patient’s journey and open questioning are essential learning skills.
