History

.

The Medical Education Unit (MEU) was established in 1997 to reform the medical curriculum to address the rapidly changing needs of healthcare delivery in our society. MEU implemented the educational policy and played a leading role in developing the new curriculum, conducting thorough reviews, consolidations, and assessments of teaching and learning practices.
These efforts resulted in highly positive outcomes and provided crucial recommendations for both the direction and implementation of teaching and learning in the Faculty of Medicine.
.
Building on decades of expertise, the Senate and the Council approved the establishment of the Institute of Medical and Health Sciences Education (IMHSE) in 2004 to further enhance and sustain the Faculty’s competitive edge by providing a robust mechanism and strong infrastructure for fostering excellence in medical and health sciences education, both within the Faculty and globally.
This move aligns with the University’s and Faculty’s aspiration to be a world-class institution excelling in teaching and research.

IMHSE has been renamed as the Bau Institute of Medical and Health Sciences Education (BIMHSE) in recognition of a generous donation of $100 million, honouring the late Dr. Bau Tsu Zung, a distinguished medical alumnus who graduated with his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) in 1927 and Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree in 1932. The inauguration ceremony was held on October 22, 2015.

As a hub for advancing medical and health sciences education within the Faculty and beyond, BIMHSE revamped its functions into three programmes in 2019: Pedagogy and Training, Research and Scholarship, and Innovation and Collaboration. This structure strengthens BIMHSE’s ability to address the evolving teaching and learning needs of health‑care professions, and to provide cohesive and integrated support for the faculty’s new curriculum initiatives.
With the expansion of educational activities—including e‑learning, AR/VR, Interprofessional Education, MBBS Enrichment Year, and Life Enrichment Programmes for Nursing students—the new framework enhances synergy in implementing projects across medical and health sciences education.
