  • Abstract

This 90-minute interactive workshop will share practical approaches to designing engaging teaching and learning across classroom, course, curriculum, and clinical settings. Using Self-Determination Theory and Bloom’s Learning Taxonomy as the core frameworks, the session will explore how student engagement can be strengthened by intentionally designing for competence, autonomy, and relatedness. Participants will examine how experiential learning, reflective practice for change, and lived authentic experiences can help attract and sustain students’ attention, motivation, and ownership of learning.

The workshop will compare strategies for large lectures and small-group teaching, and will extend discussion to community engagement and patient engagement in clinical education. Practical examples will include gamification, narrative and storytelling, unusual learning activities, and lived patient experiences etc. The session will also highlight students as partners in curriculum design, teaching innovation, and research.

Colleagues will leave with concrete tips for creating and assessing engagement-rich learning, including ways to support student ownership, co-design learning experiences, and align assessment with authentic practice. The workshop is designed to be highly interactive, with opportunities for reflection, discussion, and action planning for immediate use in participants’ own contexts. Participants will map ideas to their own teaching and identify changes for implementation.
