Establishing the validity of educational and psychological instruments is essential in both teaching and research. Teachers and researchers need to ensure that their assessment tools accurately measure the intended constructs and produce trustworthy data. Among the different forms of validity evidence, construct validity is particularly important, as it examines whether the structure of a test or scale reflects the theoretical concept it is intended to measure.
This workshop focuses on test validation, with particular emphasis on the statistical approaches used to establish construct validity, especially exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). Participants will be introduced to the purpose, principles, and applications of these two commonly used methods in instrument validation. The workshop will also discuss how EFA and CFA can be used to examine the dimensional structure of a test, evaluate item performance, and provide evidence for the validity of score interpretations.
Through guided explanations and practical examples, participants will gain a foundational understanding of how factor-analytic techniques can support the development and refinement of educational measurement tools. These skills can be applied to assessment development, educational research, and the methodology sections of grant applications and scholarly manuscripts.
